The Case

## Twenty minutes, and a life returned

There are few interventions left in medicine with the arithmetic of cataract surgery. An operation lasting under half an hour, costing a fraction of what it does in Britain, restores a person from functional blindness to independence — and with it their ability to work, to farm, to care for a family, to leave the house unaccompanied.

In much of the world that operation is simply unavailable. Not because it is difficult, but because there is no surgeon within reach, no microscope in the district hospital, and no realistic way to pay for either. The result is a wholly preventable blindness measured in tens of millions of people.

Mr Mohyudin has performed more than 5,000 of these operations in West Yorkshire. Advising a charity that funds the same operation where it cannot otherwise happen is, he says, the least complicated decision of his professional life. He sets out the reasoning in [The Twenty-Minute Operation](https://mohamedmohyudin.com/notes/the-twenty-minute-operation/).

A funded cataract list in progress. The operation itself does not change with the setting — what changes is everything around it, and whether it happens at all.

The Organisation

## World Aid Network

Funding sight-restoring eye surgery, cancer treatment and emergency disaster relief for poor and disaster-affected families in Pakistan, Indonesia and Malaysia.

### Sight-restoring surgery

Cataract is the largest single cause of avoidable blindness in the world, and the operation that reverses it takes under half an hour. Funding it is among the highest-yield interventions available anywhere in medicine.

### Local surgeons, not visiting ones

The charity works through clinicians licensed in the country concerned — PMDC-registered in Pakistan, KKI in Indonesia, MMC in Malaysia — rather than running clinics of its own. A visiting surgeon who operates and leaves has helped for a fortnight; a funded local unit helps indefinitely.

### Money that goes where it says

A no-cash policy: funds are paid directly to accredited partner hospitals rather than handed over in the field. It is an unglamorous governance decision and, in his view, the single most important one on the list.

### Beyond the eye

The same infrastructure funds cancer treatment — breast cancer as the lead programme, expanding into childhood cancers — and emergency disaster relief: food, water, shelter and winter aid for displaced families.

Instruments, lenses and consumables are funded ahead of each list and paid directly to the partner hospital.

Who Runs It

World Aid Network was founded by [Kaiser Khan](https://mrkaiserkhan.com/), a philanthropist and cultural producer, and an External Collaborator on four Disasters Emergency Committee appeals for Christian Aid. He remains founder & trustee, holding personal legal responsibility for grant management, treasury oversight and donor reporting.

Mr Mohyudin's role is narrower and entirely clinical: he advises on the eye programme — which operations are worth funding, what a partner unit needs to deliver them safely, and how to judge whether the money bought what it was supposed to buy. A charity funding sight-restoring surgery ought to have a surgeon in the room when those decisions are made.

Working Together

## Enquiries from charities and partners

Mr Mohyudin considers a limited number of advisory and mission invitations each year, prioritising programmes with an established local partner and a commitment to strengthening the resident team rather than replacing it.

Charities, NGOs and hospital units seeking a volunteer consultant ophthalmic surgeon or a clinical advisor are welcome to write. Please include the region, the proposed dates, the theatre facilities available and the local partner organisation.
